I went to an awards luncheon this morning to recognize the top office and industrial real estate developments of 2003 and came away newly inspired and re-energized. The keynote address was given by a real genuine character, Luis A. Belmonte (photo). I had never heard him speak before and was captivated by his candid comments that somehow managed to be both critical of the status quo and also personally inspiring. He was blunt. He was true. And I left having taken his comments about outsourcing, open door immigration, money flows, real estate valuations, our K-12 public school system, unfunded mandates (Medicare, Social Security) and globalization to heart. I wish I could point to a transcript of his remarks and share his wisdom, but I can't even find a decent web reference for him. Luis, have you considered taking up blogging?
At any rate, as his comments have floated through my mind today, I've decided that it's time for me to do something I've been wanting to do for a long time now: launch this Design Matters column.
As I begin this new effort, my goals are simple:
1. Provide a place for me to think about and write about design.
2. Provide a place for me to bookmark, review and annotate ideas in the design world.
3. Crystalize a design ethos, a statement about the purpose and value of good design in the world.
4. Raise awareness of design and its allied arts.
The publishing schedule isn't set yet. I will write as the spirit moves me. Hopefully over time I will be able to evolve this into a monthly or bi-monthly column.
Welcome.
May the best days be yet to come.
